HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON

The festive season, often referred to as the "silly season," can blur the lines between professional and social interactions. This time of year, typically includes office parties, team gatherings, and celebrations where alcohol may be present, potentially leading to behaviour that might not occur in a more formal setting. These factors can increase the risk of harassment and make employees feel vulnerable or pressured.

Common Types of Harassment During the Festive Season:

Sexual Harassment:

Office parties and celebrations can sometimes create an environment where individuals may behave inappropriately, such as making unwanted advances, sharing suggestive jokes, or engaging in unwanted physical contact.

Verbal Harassment:

Relaxed atmospheres can lead to jokes or comments that cross boundaries, including derogatory remarks or inappropriate humour. This might also include insensitive comments targeting someone’s background, religion, appearance, or choices and beliefs.

Cyber Harassment:

Increased use of messaging and social media during the holiday season, especially in informal contexts, can lead to inappropriate messages, photos, or comments being shared among colleagues.

Preventive Measures for the Festive Season:

  1. Reinforce Harassment Policies:

Before holiday gatherings, companies should remind employees about harassment policies and the expected standard of conduct. Reinforcing these guidelines can help employees understand that professional behaviour is required even in festive settings.

  1. Set Clear Expectations for Holiday Events:

Whether the event is on-site or off-site, companies should clarify behavioural expectations and establish boundaries around drinking and interactions. A responsible approach can help reduce the chance of inappropriate conduct.

  1. Offer Support for Reporting:

Ensure employees know how to report any inappropriate behaviour that may occur, including during holiday functions. Clear reporting channels without fear of retaliation are essential.

  1. Encourage Responsible Socialising:

Promote a positive, inclusive approach to holiday celebrations. This can be achieved by limiting alcohol, creating an environment of respect, and encouraging colleagues to look out for each other.

Maintaining a Safe, Respectful Environment:

The goal during the festive season is for everyone to enjoy a relaxed, joyful time while feeling safe and respected. By taking preventive measures and setting clear boundaries, organisations can minimise the risk of harassment and ensure that festive activities remain inclusive and enjoyable for all.

While the festive season brings opportunities for team bonding and celebration, it’s essential to remain vigilant about workplace harassment. Recognising the heightened risks and taking proactive steps to prevent inappropriate behaviour can create a safer, more respectful environment for everyone—during the holiday season and beyond.
